For many companies, the Christmas party is the one event of the year when the whole team gets together outside the office. In December, Prague makes a perfect backdrop: markets on the squares, lit-up bridges and concerts in churches. It is also one of the busiest times of year for restaurants, boats and venues. When to start planning

Choose the date first and the venue second. December dates fill up fast, often as early as the autumn for restaurants, boats and venues alike. For a small group in a restaurant, a few weeks' notice is usually enough. For a boat just for your company, a whole hall or a programme for hundreds of people, allow two to six months.

If December is full, consider a party at the end of November, when the first Christmas markets open, or a New Year get-together in January. The atmosphere is similar and the choice of venues is wider.

How to choose the format

Before you compare specific venues, answer three questions. Do you mainly want people to talk, or to do something together? For conversation, a dinner in a private room or on a boat works better; for a shared experience, a cooking class or a game. Is the evening a thank-you for the year's work and a festive occasion? Then a historic hall with a programme is the right fit. And how much time do people have? A party after work needs a different rhythm from a Friday event for which the team keeps the whole afternoon free. The answers narrow the choice and save you a lot of emails with suppliers.

Unusual venues

For a company party, Prague offers far more than a hotel function room:

• A boat on the Vltava. Boats run all year, and in winter they are heated and enclosed. We can arrange a boat just for your group.

A dinner cruise

You board on the embankment, cruise past the lit-up castle and bridges, and have dinner on board. The format works for a small team and for a large company alike; only the size of the boat changes. A guided Christmas market walk and dinner

The best time for a walk through the markets is late afternoon, when the lights come on. A guide takes the team around Old Town Square and the streets nearby, you stop for mulled wine on the way, and the evening continues at a reserved restaurant. An Advent concert and dinner

A concert in a church or a historic hall, followed by a festive dinner nearby. We arrange tickets for the whole group, seated together, and time the dinner to the end of the concert.

The team cooks under a chef's guidance and then eats the results together. The alternative is a guided beer tasting at a brewery. Both formats bring people from different departments together better than a traditional dinner, because conversation comes naturally.

A classic party in an unusual venue

For large companies, a party with catering, music and a programme is still the safest choice. The venue can be unusual, such as a historic palace or a boat, even if the format stays classic.

A small team or the whole company?

• Up to 20 people: a private room in a restaurant, a tasting menu, a guided market walk, a cooking class.
• 20 to 100 people: a boat just for your group, a brewery, a cellar venue, a concert and dinner.
• More than 100 people: a historic hall or palace, a large boat, catering, a programme and transport for everyone.

With large groups, do not forget the logistics: a cloakroom, registration, a seating plan and transport there and back.

Transport there and back

Nobody should drive to a party where drinks are served. Arrange transport in advance: a coach from the office or the hotel and back, or several departures at different times so that nobody has to stay until the end. Group coaches may not enter the historic centre and stop only at designated coach stops, so we plan the pick-up and drop-off points in advance. For smaller groups, cars or vans are enough.

The menu and Czech Christmas traditions

For anyone visiting from abroad, the food is part of the experience. A Czech Christmas means carp and potato salad on Christmas Eve, homemade Christmas biscuits and mulled wine. Elements of the tradition can be worked into a festive menu; just remember vegetarian options and allergies. Collect dietary requirements together with the sign-ups.

A party for an international team

If colleagues are coming from offices in other countries, it is worth combining the party with festive Prague. A whole festive day works well: Prague Castle with a guide in the morning, a Christmas concert in the afternoon and a traditional Czech Christmas dinner in the evening.
