About Terezín Memorial
Terezín was built at the end of the eighteenth century as a fortress town. During the German occupation of the Czech lands it became two places of suffering: the Small Fortress served as a Gestapo prison, and the main town was turned into a ghetto for Jews from Bohemia, Moravia and other parts of Europe.

What happened at Terezín?
During the German occupation the Small Fortress was a Gestapo prison, and the town became a ghetto through which about 140,000 Jews were deported. More than 30,000 people died in the ghetto, and most of the others were sent on to extermination camps.
